School information to be sent via text messages

June 22, 2011

Washington County Public Schools will use text messages as a way for parents to receive information about school closings, early dismissals, emergency situations and other school news.

A letter was sent home with students in March to inform parents of the changes, school system spokesman Richard Wright said Wednesday.

Parents and anyone else signed up for email announcements from the school system were sent an email Tuesday about the changes.

To sign up for text messages, go to www.alertnowsms.com and enter PIN number 820820, then enter your cellphone information.

AlertNow already was providing phone-notification service and will now also provide the text messaging and email services, Wright said.

AlertNow phone calls, emails and text messaging will be made during the school day for emergencies, the letter states. Schools might continue to use the phone service for nonemergency announcements.

The email notices are available for parents and guardians, who can contact their child’s school to make sure the school has their email information, Wright said.
