Nathan Jesse “Buck” Souders Jr. of Keedysville, Md., died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center. Nathan was fondly known as “Buck” to family and friends.

Born April 14, 1921, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Nathan Jesse and Catherine B. (Zimmerman) Souders Sr.

He was employed as a supervisor at M.P. Moller Inc. for 38 years and retired in 2009 from the University of Maryland, Western Maryland Research Center in Keedysville.

A veteran of the U.S. Army and the Merchant Marines, he served overseas during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a life member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

He was a past president of the AFL-CIO Local 21108 and past president of the Keedysville Ruritan Club. He was also a member of American Legion Post 10, the Fairplay Volunteer Fire Co. and the Waynesboro Eagles Club.

Nathan was an avid sports fan who enjoyed bowling in various leagues for years. He also loved to watch golf, Orioles baseball and pro football. He was also an accomplished artist who loved drawing and painting murals.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Reva V. (Ebersole) Souders; one daughter, Sue Ellen of Williamsport; his sister-in-law, M. Louise Souders of Hagerstown; eight nieces; and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard W. Souders and Howard B. Souders; and five sisters, Jane Souders, Dorothy Jones, Marie Ruck, Frances Mahler and Betty S. Raicich.

The family will receive family and friends Thursday, June 23, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Private graveside services will be at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
