Smithsburg High boiler project moved ahead

WASHINGTON COUNTY — Smithsburg High School should have a new boiler in place before winter arrives.

The boiler contract, as well as one for custodial supplies for the school system, were approved unanimously as part of the consent agenda during the June 7 meeting of the Washington County Board of Education.

The boiler project was not originally expected to be done this summer, but got moved up because the school system is using savings to take care of some deferred maintenance projects, school system officials said.

At least some of the savings came from money the school system budgeted for the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts lease payment. The state provided funding for the lease payment, freeing up the money the school board budgeted for the lease.

Musser Mechanical of Mercersburg, Pa., received the boiler job with a low bid of $629,100, according to presentation documents.

There was only one other bidder for the project. Mick’s Plumbing & Heating of Thurmont, Md., bid $695,000.

The project has an aggressive schedule and many companies already had summer jobs lined up, Purchasing Supervisor Lisa Freeman told the school board.

Most of the work will be done this summer, with the boiler ready by October, Freeman said. The job includes demolition, abatement of materials containing asbestos and painting the boiler room, according to Freeman and presentation documents.

The consent agenda also included a contract for custodial supplies for 48 schools and offices.

The supply contract was awarded on a line-item basis so two companies were awarded contracts.

Weiss Brothers of Hagerstown got a contract to supply 27 items for $264,440.

FPC Distribution of Elkridge, Md., got a contract to supply 16 items for $135,450.

Orders will be placed on an as-needed basis for the supplies.

Six companies submitted bids for the custodial supplies contracts. To see the detailed bid information, go to the school system’s website at www.wcps.k12.md.us.
