Maryland State Highway Administration projects for Washington County

June 18, 2011

The Maryland State Highway Administration did not have a breakdown for all of its projects in Washington County for fiscal years 2011 and 2012.

Geoff McCammon, an SHA spokesman, wrote in an email that smaller paving projects, sidewalk upgrades and traffic signal improvements are not factored in, so an attempt to get a total of the costs would not work.

He provided the following list of what SHA considers major projects that either were completed last year or are under way:

  •  U.S. 40 intersection improvements at Edgewood Drive. The cost is $7 million. The project is expected to be finished this month.
  •  Interstate 70 resurfacing between Md. 66 and the Frederick County, Md., line. The cost is $3.7 million. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.
  •  Cleaning and painting the Interstate 81 bridge over the Potomac River. The cost is $2.2 million. It was finished in April.
  •  Cleaning and painting the U.S. 340 bridge over the Potomac River. The cost is $7 million. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.

The following list provided by McCammon is of major projects to be undertaken in Washington County in the future:
  •  Replacing the deck where Md. 67 crosses U.S. 340. The estimated cost is $1.4 million. The project is expected to start this month or in July and be completed in the fall.
  •  Resurfacing U.S. 40 between Big Pool and Clear Spring. The estimated cost is $1.9 million. The project is expected to start in the summer and be completed in the fall.
  •  Improvements to the interchange at interstates 70 and 81. The estimated cost is $3.6 million. The project is expected to start in July and be completed in the fall of 2012.
  •  Replacing the deck where Md. 63 crosses CSX property. The estimated cost is $1.3 million. The project is expected to start Monday and be completed by the end of the summer.
  •  Safety and resurfacing work on U.S. 40 (National Pike) from Md. 56 (Big Pool Road) to Boyd Road. The estimated cost is $1.8 million. The project is expected to start this month or in July and be completed in the fall.
  •  Geometric improvements to Alternate U.S. 40 at Poffenberger Road. There is no cost estimate yet. The project is expected to start in the fall and be completed in the spring of 2012.
