Two sent to hospital after I-81 crash near Williamsport exit

June 18, 2011

Two men were sent to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown after a one-car crash on Interstate 81 on Saturday, police said.

Maryland State Police Sgt. S. Cain said a passenger in the car — Edward Alan Deane, 51, of Elkton, Md. — was flown to the hospital in a helicopter after the crash with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The driver — Joseph Schmid, 57, of Pennsylvania — was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

A nursing supervisor said Saturday night that Deane still was being assessed and Schmid no longer was a patient at the hospital.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. The car Schmid was driving north on I-81 went off the road near exit 1, near Williamsport, and struck a guard rail, Cain said.
