CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A small kitchen fire on the third floor forced the evacuation of the Franklin County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Chambersburg’s Emergency Services Chief William FitzGerald said the courthouse was evacuated following a kitchenette fire in Judge Shawn Meyer’s chambers at 4:29 p.m.

He said courthouse employees were present in the building at the time of evacuation.

By the time fire crews from the borough, Franklin Fire Co., Letterkenny and New Franklin arrived on the scene, the fire was put out with a fire extinguisher, FitzGerald said.

“Smoke had to be removed from the building,” FitzGerald said.

He said crews used positive pressure fans to drive smoke from the building.

FitzGerald said the fire did not cause any injuries or damage.

In less than 30 minutes, employees returned to the building, he said.

Franklin County administrator John Hart said the building evacuation went smoothly.

“When we have this type of situation, we evacuate the whole building,” Hart said. “We go through and check bathrooms and hallways and get everybody out.”

Hart said the courthouse house staff had a fire drill last week.
