It didn’t take long for North Hagerstown freshman Teddy Schoeck to establish himself as the top boys player in Washington County.

Following in the footsteps of several successful siblings who played for the Hubs, Schoeck compiled the best record of any Washington County No. 1 boys singles player (13-1), then teamed with senior Eric Harrison to win the Region I boys doubles title and reach the Maryland state quarterfinals.

Schoeck is the 2011 Herald-Mail Washington County Boys Tennis Player of the Year.

“I didn’t know what to expect, I just wanted to come in and work hard,” Schoeck said. “Winning the award means a lot. It’s an honor.”

Schoeck’s reputation as a quality player was known to North coach Kevin Reynolds before Schoeck played a single match. Once Schoeck put on a Hubs uniform, he wasted no time making a believer out of Reynolds.

“I’d heard all about him and met him a month before the season started. Never saw him play,” Reynolds said. “Eric had full intention of being No. 1 and Teddy went out and beat him.

“The top compliment I can give to any athlete is that they’re coachable, and there should be a (picture) of (Schoeck) in the dictionary besides coachable. He follows me and watches other matches with me just to get insight. He asks to be coached and wants to improve, because he knows he can.”

Schoeck and Harrison had to put a disappointing three-set loss to Clear Spring’s Gavin Myers and Tyler Brown in the boys doubles final at the county tournament. They did that by sweeping through the Region I tournament without dropping a set, then prevailing in a three-set match in the first round at the state tournament.

“At regionals we started to click,” Schoeck said. “The loss at counties helped us a lot. It got us more focused and hungry, and we worked hard at practice and went into regionals and everything clicked at the right time.”

Schoeck is joined on The Herald-Mail’s 2011 All-County Boys Tennis First Team by:

Aleshin-Guendel, a sophomore, went 15-6 at No. 1 boys singles and won the county tournament title, defeating Adams in three sets in the final.
