Councilman elected mayor of Harpers Ferry

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — A town councilman was elected mayor and two other council members were defeated Tuesday in the Harpers Ferry election, according to complete, but unofficial results.Joe Anderson garnered 107 votes for mayor, more than twice as many as challenger Bob Johnson, who received 45 votes.Anderson will replace outgoing mayor Jim Addy.Three challengers received the most votes in the town council race. Betsy Bainbridge and Greg Vaughn each received 93 votes, with Jerry Hutton close behind with 92 votes.Incumbents Dan Riss and Charlotte Thompson also were re-elected, with each garnering 77 votes.Among those not elected to council were incumbents Patty Morse and Elayne Edel, who received 65 and 60 votes, respectively.Harpers Ferry has a population of about 300 residents, about 170 of whom are registered voters.Addy predicted a big turnout for Tuesday’s election because of the open mayoral seat and the nine people running for town council.All terms are for two years. The winners will take office July 1.
