Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - June 11

June 11, 2011

Thumbs up to Dylan Eyler, 17, of Cascade, a recent Smithsburg High School graduate who compiled a Cal Ripken-like record by attending school for 14 years without missing a day. A sterling example of dedication and discipline. Congratulations, Dylan.

Thumbs up to the organizers of the 16th Annual Western Maryland Blues Fest, who again produced a great weekend of fun and music in and around Hagerstown. Another job well done.

Thumbs up to Erin Sponaugle, a fifth-grade teacher at Tomahawk Intermediate School in Hedgesville, W.Va., who won a scholarship to the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program in Huntsville, Ala.

Thumbs up to the Hagerstown City Council, which introduced an ordinance this week to purchase and renovate a building on North Potomac Street in an effort to protect the value of neighboring properties.

Thumbs up to the organizers of and participants in the 21st annual Operation God Bless America ride, which began Sunday in Greencastle, Pa., and ended in Martinsburg, W.Va. The event raised $58,000 for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Thumbs down to U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., for sending lewd pictures of himself over the internet, then lying about it when he got caught. Is it any wonder why the public is so cynical about Washington politicians?
