Mail Call - June 10

June 10, 2011

“Instead of saying ‘Two wrongs don’t make a right,’ maybe we should be saying ‘Two illegals shouldn’t be able to make a legal.’”

— Funkstown

“In answer to June 2, from the Hagerstown caller, you poor soul. I feel so sorry for you, to think that President Obama got bin Laden. He didn’t; the Navy SEALs did — and I still would like to see proof of that. Obama is good for one thing only, to mess up our country so bad that it is going to take years to straighten it out, if it ever does.”

— Smithsburg

“The new bus stop off Franklin Street is very nice, but they need to put some cushions on the benches so that the people who sleep there at night — and believe me, there will be — are more comfortable.”

— Hagerstown

“This is regarding Boonsboro’s Mail Call about the mo-peds and the bicycles. What is wrong with you? People don’t speed at 30 mph. The mo-peds, bicycles are in the middle of the street, they don’t have tags, they don’t have insurance, and normally the reason somebody’s on a mo-ped or a bicycle is because they have a DUI conviction. They shouldn’t be on the road to start with.”

— Boonsboro

“How many employees and inmates at the Maryland Correctional Institution? The American flag is left to fly day and night, unlit. It is left out in horrible wind and rain. What a disgrace.”

— Sharpsburg

“This is calling in regards to the comment of the Fred Basset article. Could it be that you’re just jealous because you don’t have a dog as cute as Fred Basset?”

— Hancock

“How many would think that after 2 1/2 years of President Obama being president, he is still blaming President Bush? Maybe we could accept that if our economy got better, but unemployment is higher, gas prices are higher, food prices are higher, our house value is at the bottom. What can he take credit for in our economy?”

— Boonsboro

“I’m a very faithful reader of Mail Call. I get the paper just for that column. I have a solution to many problems. Freeze the teachers’ pay, put muzzles on the pit bulls, put helmets on the scooter riders for our safety, and put gags on the politicians to keep their mouth out of our business.”

— Funkstown

“Citizens of Williamsport and town council: Think about building a big Sheetz. It will be bigger and generate more traffic, 24/7. And the old Sheetz building is classified as commercial and will generate more traffic. Do we need this in the small, quiet town of Williamsport? Talk to your town councilperson.”

— Williamsport

“I would like to suggest that a sign be put up on South Mountain — to replace the one that used to be there, about Appalachia — that says ‘Welcome to Developerland, where no project of any developer, no matter how unworthy, unwanted, wasteful, or actually harmful, will ever go without having taxpayer money being dumped on it.’ I think that’s only fair, so everybody knows.”

— North End

“On GM bailout, the caller failed to say, GM admitted in 2010 it didn’t repay its government bailout. Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint on its deceptive advertising on TV. ... Obama gave United Auto Workers unions a big chunk of GM stock, even though UAW helped bankrupt GM, and GM has value today, as your president pumped billions of our tax money into GM.”

— Hagerstown

“Here we go again. The County Commissioners not only are freely spending our tax money to aid developers, but in their infinite wisdom have decided to charge an additional dump fee for yard debris, effective July 1. As a homeowner, even if you have a dump sticker you will still have to go over the scale and pay the dump rate for yard debris. The commissioners passed this under the radar, and my guess is so that they wouldn’t have to deal with the disagreement of their decision from homeowners.”
