The Hagerstown Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recognized at the 93rd annual Convention of Phi Theta Kappa in Seattle.

Phi Theta Kappa is the national honor society for two-year colleges. This year's convention was attended by more than 3,500 members from 535 chapters around the world. Five students represented HCC's chapter at the conference — Aletha Shaffer of Boonsboro; Amanda England and Carlee Myers, both of Hagerstown; and siblings Andrea and Stefan Theodoru, both of Smithsburg.

This year, HCC's Pi Theta chapter was recognized as a Five-Star Chapter, a distinction earned through the completion of service-learning projects intended to aid the college and community.

HCC's Pi Theta chapter was also one of 25 chapters honored with a Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award. HCC's PTK officers for the 2010-11 academic year are Shaffer; Brittany Smetzer of Clear Spring; Oliver Bully, Jessica Cripps, Keri-Jon Faulkner, Lindsay Febres, Jennifer McCullough, Beate Powell, and Glory Sterling, all of Hagerstown; and Tessa Walls of Hancock.
