One lane of Pennsylvania Ave. closed for slurry pavement work

June 08, 2011

HAGERSTOWN — One lane of Pennsylvania Avenue (U.S. 11)  from Colonial Sports Bar and Grill Restaurant to Air View Road north of Hagerstown, was closed Wednesday as a crew laid slurry pavement on the northbound side of the road.

"Slurry pavement is a thin-layered chemical type pavement that we can put on the asphalt," said Cliff Graham of Progressive Engineering Construction Inc. "It's supposed to add five to seven years to the life of the asphalt."

Graham said that his company was contracted by the state of Maryland to work on the project. The work began Wednesday morning, and Graham said it should last about four days.

"We are going to do this all the way up to the Pennsylvania state line," he said.

Because only one lane is open, traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue has to be stopped periodically by workers, backing it up for a little while.

After workers finish the northbound lane, Graham says they will reopen it and start working on the southbound lane, which will then close.
