CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A Chambersburg woman faces charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child after her 4-year-old stepson was injured in March, according to Chambersburg Borough Police.

Michele Hunter, 26, of East Vine Street, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. The boy's father, William M. Hunter Sr., 25, of 628 Barlow Ave., Deptford, N.J., is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, police said in a news release.

Police said they were dispatched at 8:30 p.m. March 16 to the home, where they found the child, William "Billy" Hunter Jr., in cardiac arrest. When interviewing the child's Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center physician, police said they were told the boy suffered a severe brain injury.

The boy was transferred to a rehabilitation center and is now in foster care, according to police.

Police allege Michele Hunter admitted to pushing the boy on the morning of March 15.

"Billy lost consciousness and began to display symptoms of a brain injury throughout the day on Tuesday and into Wednesday (3/16/11) until suffering cardiac arrest that evening," police wrote in the news release.

William M. Hunter Sr. was not in the home when the child was injured, but he saw the boy's condition later that day, police alleged.

Michele Hunter was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Gary Carter and jailed in Franklin County (Pa.) Jail on $200,000 bail. Online court documents did not indicate the status of William M. Hunter Sr.'s case.
