CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Tanner Everton, Trevor Poe and Cody Johnson each drove in two runs to lead Jefferson to an 8-4 win over Fairmont Senior for the West Virginia Class AAA championship Saturday.

The Cougars (33-7) won the 10th title in school history. Coach John Lowery Sr. has been there for all 10 of them, his first coming in 1979.

Fairmont Senior (19-8) was denied its first championship. The Polar Bears have lost seven times in the championship game, including five times since 2003.

The game was tied 3-3 entering the top of the fifth before Jefferson scored three times to take control. Poe hit an RBI single in the inning off Fairmont Senior starter Andrew Marra. Fletcher DeVaul relieved Marra and gave up a two-run single to Johnson.

Jefferson added two more runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Jamie Richard and a run-scoring single by Matt Ballou.

Trevor Malnick and Frank Wilson each drove in two runs for Fairmont Senior, which reached the title game by beating Greenbrier East on Friday. Wilson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his 10th of the season.

Everton started the game on the mound for Jefferson and he and Chris Payne scattered eight hits.

Jefferson, which beat defending champion Nitro in the semifinals, did not commit an error and compiled nine hits.
