MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A preliminary hearing for a man charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of a Hagerstown resident last week was continued Thursday in Berkeley County Magistrate Court.

Troy Michael Butts, 30, waived his right to the hearing within 10 days of his incarceration during a brief court appearance Thursday.

Keith Douglas, 43, died on May 26, two days after a fight with Butts, and after police said he was declared brain dead.

Butts, who was being held at Eastern Regional Jail Thursday night, was initially charged with two counts of malicious wounding in the fight.

A second victim, Joseph Carter, also of Hagerstown, was treated at Winchester Medical Center for a possible broken nose that he suffered in the altercation, according to court documents.

The fight at 250 Appomattox Drive was said to have stemmed from allegations that Butts had stolen money from the two men, the documents said.
