Kiwanis Club awards six scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown awarded six scholarships to graduating high school seniors at its May 12 meeting.

This year's scholarships totaled $6,400.

Four $600 scholarships were awarded to Key Club members from North and South Hagerstown High Schools. Scholarships are based on academic accomplishments, extracurricular activity and financial consideration.

This year's winners are Sally Johnston (planning to attend Hood College), Katelyn Fitzgerald (West Virginia University), Daniel Roberts (University of Maryland), all from North Hagerstown High School; and Brianna Green from South Hagerstown High School (Towson University) .

The Atlee C. Kepler Scholarship was awarded to Diana Mittag from Smithsburg High School. Diana will attend Baptist Bible College in the fall and plans to major in elementary education. The scholarship is $2,000.

The John R. Dayhoff Scholarship, for $2,000, was awarded to Andre DeSouza from North Hagerstown High School. The Dayhoff Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate who plans to pursue a career in a health related field. Andre will attend the University of Maryland College Park in the fall with plans to major in biology.

The Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown has awarded scholarships to deserving high school seniors for more than 40 years. The Club has distributed scholarships totaling $31,400 since 2000.

The Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown meets at 12:15 p.m. Thursdays, at the Academy Theatre Banquet & Conference Center, 58 E. Washington Street, downtown Hagerstown.
