Mail Call - June 2

June 02, 2011

“I’d like to know if you need a building permit to do house remodeling such as electrical wiring, plumbing, and moving walls and partitions — also, adding on porches. If so, why don’t I see these permits posted, if they are required?”
— Williamsport

“Thanks to the Funkstown town council for wasting our tax money on useless street sweeping. How about cleaning up the vacant lot on West Maple Street instead?”
— Funkstown

“Hagerstown caller, after just learning that over 3,500 corporations, etc., who got hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars in stimulus money, courtesy of President Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress, owe $700 million in back taxes, I really wonder how anyone who actually pays income taxes can be a Democrat.”
— Frederick, Md.

“The Washington County Commissioners are using the taxpayer money to fix a traffic problem on Robinwood Drive that is the result of bad planning and management. We thought we voted in five fiscally conservative Republicans, but it turned out we only voted in one. The other four rode the Republican wave into office, thanks to the Tea Party. I would take 10 Kristin Aleshires to any of these.”
— Hagerstown

“I would like to know why these people have to park right in front of the stores, where the doors are, when they got the whole wide parking lot there to park in. You know, there can be a space right outside there, the first space, but they have to park right in front of the door of a store they’re going into.”
— Hagerstown

“Well, I see the Donald trumped the Republicans. Can you believe he was the leading candidate in the Republican party for president? That just shows you how easy it is to fool the Republicans — but then again, Fox News has been fooling them for years. But my main point is while the Donald was bragging about ‘I got President Obama to show his birth certificate,’ President Obama said, ‘I got bin Laden.’”
— Hagerstown

“You know, I listen to these talk shows, just for curiosity, and these Republicans in Congress or whatever, and I get tired of hearing them say Ronald Reagan this, Ronald Reagan that. And I liked Ronald Reagan, personally — but I’m not a Republican — but why wouldn’t they stop using him as a crutch? He’s been dead for years. What happened to the Bushes? Don’t they idolize them, too? But they don’t say anything about them. It’s always Ronald Reagan’s ways, what Ronald Reagan did.”
— Hagerstown

“This is to Paul. Your article on ‘Some things are too good to throw away’ was so true and meaningful to me, and I’m sure, others. I am making copies of it to share with people in my life. It says so much about our daily lives. We need more letters to the editor like yours.”
— Hagerstown

“I’d like to find out why it’s never printed about how much foreign aid we’re giving to other countries, and what countries we actually give it to.”
— Williamsport

“We don’t need an economic director in Washington County. We need a new governor and president.”
— Boonsboro

“I’m calling regarding the concern over dropping Medicare as we know it. That really concerns me, considering the majority of the people who have Medicare are senior citizens. As people get older, they have more and more trouble understanding health insurance policies. We all know what happened with Medicare Part D, when the Bush administration came up with that. It was very confusing, and even today people still don’t understand the coverage they have.”
— Boonsboro

“First, I’d like to say Ashley Haywood doesn’t want to be re-elected to City Council, when she makes ... statements that the citizens of Hagerstown have to put a sidewalk for houses that have never had a sidewalk for 60 years. ... You will not get re-elected. And what is the BOE thinking, paying the superintendent that kind of a salary? Obviously, they’re not worried about being fiscally responsible.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling in about the one about the mo-peds, complaining. If people don’t drive so fast, they wouldn’t complain. And bicycles, motorcycles, mo-ped, is legal for highways. They don’t look at it might be the only transportation people have. People slowed down and drive normal, they wouldn’t complain.”
— Boonsboro

“Who is your paper kidding? Not one of the signs about the budget were in support of the senior center at Robinwood. Seniors have expressed disapproval of that site continually, on deaf ears. I thought traffic was already a problem. Why add to it? Another mistake the taxpayers will be stuck paying for.”
— Hagerstown
