Janet Kathryn Detrich Dayhoff, 84, of Hagerstown, Md., died Monday, May 30, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born Nov. 23, 1926, in Hagerstown, Washington County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Stewart B. and Mae Leckron Detrich.
Janet was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, Class of 1944. She was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps and a graduate of the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1947. She did private duty nursing, worked in a doctor's office, and volunteered at a cerebral palsy clinic and other local health endeavors.
Janet was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Sunday school in Hagerstown. She served as a teacher, was active on committees and had special devotion to the Heritage Room and library.
She formerly worked with the PTA and Girl Scouts. She also volunteered in the Paramount Elementary School library for a number of years. She was an avid collector of postcards and books relating to local history.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Donald R. Dayhoff; daughter, Barbara D. Curtis; twin sister, Jane Kitzmiller; three grandsons and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her son, John, in 1997.
The family will receive friends Friday, June 3, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Eric Norgard officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, after a time of fellowship at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown MD 21740, to benefit the heating-system fund.
