Mercersburg ousted in state quarters

PREP BASEBALL

PENNSBURG, Pa. — Mercersburg Academy only gave up three hits, but all were home runs in a 5-4 eight-inning loss to Hill School in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools state tournament quarterfinals.

Matt Timoney had a double and drove home two to give Mercersburg a one-run lead in the sixth, but Hill School responded with a home run in the seventh to send it to extra innings, then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth.

John Olszewski scored three runs for the Blue Storm (18-6).



COLLEGE BASEBALL

Conway in action

LEXINGTON, Va. — Smithsburg graduate Josh Conway pitched in two of Coastal Carolina’s four tournament games and the Chanticleers wrapped up the Big South Conference championship on Saturday with a 6-1 decision over Gardner-Webb.

In Saturday’s final, Conway pitched the ninth inning and allowed the only Gardner-Webb run.

In Friday’s 3-2 semifinal victory over Liberty, Conway (8-1) pitched the ninth inning and picked up the win when Coastal scored a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Coastal, ranked 24th in the nation, is now 40-18 heading into the NCAA Division I regionals on Friday.

Brashears honored

APPLETON, Wis. — St. Maria Goretti graduate Kevin Brashears was one of five Shenandoah University players who gained All-South Region honors.

Brashears, a senior who batted .384 and had 15 stolen bases, was named a first-team outfielder.

Shenandoah finished the regular season with a 37-7 record and won the USA South Conference title.
