BALTIMORE — Washington County girls continued to leave opponents scratching their heads Saturday at the Maryland State Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Morgan State University.
Boonsboro held off Harford Tech 108-100 to win the Class 1A girls title, which has been brought home by a county team 15 of the last 16 years.
It’s the Boonsboro girls’ eighth title overall and first since 2005.
“This was our goal since the beginning of the season,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “The girls rose to the occasion and did everything and more. It was amazing. I’m still kind of in shock. ... Almost every single girl who came scored.”
The Warriors won five events Saturday. Sophomore Abby Duncan successfully defended her titles in the 100 (12.31 seconds) and 200 (25.47), freshman Maggie Sullivan won the 100 hurdles (15.57) and 300 hurdles (46.88) and senior Becky Young won the shot put (36 feet, 6 inches).
The county’s other girls champion was North Hagerstown junior Charlotte Anderson, who won the 2A shot put (36-2).
“I’m thrilled, very pleased, just really blessed,” Duncan said. “What more can I say? ... It’s really exciting that our dreams came true.”
In between her two victories, Duncan placed third in the 400 (58.89) as her quest to finish the season unbeaten in all three dashes fell short.
“It was a huge goal that I set, but ... it is what it is,” she said. “I expected better in the 400, but I still placed and it was more points for our team.”
“I’m just really happy that I got to contribute,” said Sullivan, who sensationally capped her first varsity season. “This (sweep of the hurdles) was more like my goal to get by the end of my senior year.”
Young fittingly capped her varsity career with a personal-best throw in the shot put.
“It felt really smooth,” she said. “I’m really glad I won. It’s my last year. All that work, it really paid off.”
The North girls, last year’s 2A state champs, fell just short in their title defense, edged 78.5-75 by Liberty.
“We gave it a hell of a run,” North coach Robert Waugh said. “Our girls stepped up and gave it everything they had. They just fell a little short. ... One place here, one place there and we’re the ones taking a victory lap.”
They got every point possible from Anderson in the shot put.
“I’m pleased,” Anderson said. “I wanted 38-4 to qualify for nationals, but what can you do after sitting out in the sun all day?
“I’m still excited, though. I can take the gold medal home to Mom.”
Senior Beth Wagner had a busy day for the Hubs, placing second in the high jump (5-4), fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.61) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.72). North also got runner-up performances from junior Raven Jackson in the long jump (16-9 1/2) and freshman Emily Ward in the 1,600 (5:20.01).
Ward’s time in the 1,600 is the best in the Tri-State area this spring.
“I’m really excited,” she said. “My goal was to get 5:20 and score points, but I never expected to get second.”
The Hubs also got a third-place finish from Jessica Hunt, Imani Carter, Christine Randall and Corie Anderson in the 4x100 (49.66).
The South girls placed third in the 3A 4x100 as Elizsha Streeter, Kayla Freeman, Jaid Sandeen and Kiona Mency combined to run the lap in 49.50. Sandeen won the pole vault Friday.
Also for the Boonsboro girls, Meghan Alves, Sullivan, Zora Chalkley and Emily Cronise placed third in the 4x400 (4:13.25).
