Broadfording defeats CVCS for spot in MDCC tourney final

PREP BASEBALL

Trevor Snodderly had two hits, including a two-run homer in a four-run second inning that gave Broadfording a 5-0 lead on the way to a 5-3 MDCC tournament semifinal victory over Cumberland Valley Christian at Grace Academy on Friday.

Joe Garrish had two hits and drove in two runs for the Lions (10-6), who will face Heritage Academy at Shalom Christian for the title.

Garrish (5-3) also earned the victory with four innings of two-hit ball, allowing two runs. He walked one and struck out seven. Matt South got the save, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four.

Jefferson 7, Moorefield 4

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. — Jefferson broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the sixth inning to defeat Moorefield.

Trevor Poe and Jamie Richard each had two RBIs for Jefferson (29-7). Poe belted a home run.

The Cougars play at Martinsburg on Monday in the West Virginia Class AAA Region II final at 7 p.m.

Southern Fulton 4, McConnellsburg 1

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. — Maddie Mellott had three hits and three RBIs to lead Southern Fulton past McConnellsburg (6-13).

Taylor Leasure had two hits, Marley Elbin hit a double and Kelsey White pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts to pick up the win for the Indians (9-7).

MEN’S GOLF

Bushey finishes 25th

SCOTTSBORO, Ala.  — Smithsburg graduate Chris Bushey shot a 6-over-par 78 on Friday in the final round of the NJCAA Division II national championship.

After rounds of 77-69-71, Bushey ended with a 295 total for 72 holes, good for 25th place in the medal standings out of 128 golfers.

He also led Potomac State to a sixth-place finish behind champion Southeast Community College of New England.

Williamsport graduate Zach Weber, representing Hagerstown Community College, finished with a final-round 81 for a four-round total of 318 and a tie for 101st place.



WOMEN’S GOLF

Grier in NCAA Division I

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. — Smithsburg graduate Alicia Grier shot a 6-over-par 78 for Coastal Carolina University in the third round of the NCAA Division I tournament at Traditions Golf Club.

Grier’s 54-hole total stands at 29-over 245 on the par-72 Traditions course. As a team, Coastal Carolina is in 22nd place, far behind first-place UCLA heading into today’s final round.
