Mail Call - May 19

“This is to all you people who are calling in and writing in about college tuition and petitions. Does it make you happy to hate these people that speak Spanish or Chinese? What is it about it that makes you hate them?”
— Washington County

“The American people better wake up, and soon. The Republicans are crowing about they are cutting spending, budgets, programs, etc., because that’s what the American people elected them to do. Well, the only cuts they are cutting pertain to the low- and middle-class people. In fact, if anything, they are attempting to give more to the wealthy and big corporations. So the cuts are at the expense of the poor.”
— Hagerstown

“Like many others, I appreciated learning the salaries of BOE employees. However, there’s another group who work in our public schools, employed not by the BOE but by our local health department. This group of ladies work in our schools’ health office and include RNs, LPNs, and CNAs, or certified nursing assistants. ... I would like The Herald-Mail to consider publishing the salaries and hourly pay of these ladies, as well as all the employees of the Washington County Health Department, as they, too, are public employees.”
— Washington County

“I read the paper every day. I’d like to know about the pension money, how much money Washington County owes and has to pay in pension money in the next, say, 20 years. Because I’m afraid — they say they make as much money going on retirement as what they do working, with their benefits.”
— Hagerstown
