Mail Call - May 19

May 18, 2011

“Congratulations to the 14 student-athletes who were honored with the True Grit. We thank you for being a good inspiration to the rest of us. Best wishes in all you try to do.”
— Sharpsburg

“To the Berkeley Springs, W.Va., caller who complained about having so many kids in one room, and trying to teach them and couldn’t teach them, and that it was a drag on them for 180 days, and then thinking, a lot of the people think they make too much: If you don’t like your job, you’re the type of teacher that I had whenever I was in school that shouldn’t have been there. They never taught anybody. They were just a hindrance to everyone.”
— Hagerstown

“‘My dad’s better than your dad. My bike’s better than yours. I can run faster than you. My ice cream’s better than yours.’ Remember those things when you were a 6-years-old, you used to say to your friends? ‘I’m better than you.’ Well, that’s what the Republicans are doing. ‘My president did more to get bin Laden than your president.’ Even though he stated publicly that ‘I’m not worried about that man.’ Republicans, do yourself a favor. Take the high road. Please be quiet. You’re acting like little, little children.”
— Hagerstown

“Well, I see Del. Donoghue bombed out again on the Hagerstown/ Washington County area again. They had a meeting on Wednesday evening discussing the latest Maryland session, and he was absent and he said he had to work. Well, I tell you what, he’s working for us. ... He’s working for Washington County. And his excuse of saying it wasn’t important ... you better start listening to people, because I think this may very well be your last term.”
— Hagerstown

“After reading Wednesday morning’s paper about county commissioners giving, maybe the county commissioners could give us a light at Halfway Boulevard and Stotler Road. After all, we are taxpayers.”
— Halfway

“Hagerstown, I give Bush credit for keeping us safe for 7 1/2 years. Only Congress can declare war, and your top Dems gave the OK to go in Iraq. Bill Clinton had two chances to take bin Laden out but refused. So we had 9/11. President Obama let the terrorists free who killed 17 sailors on the USS Cole (under Clinton watch). The USS Cole was done by bin Laden’s thugs. Election time is close. Holder and (Obama) are trying to excoriate the SEALs for waterboarding three killers. Lives were saved by waterboarding. Get your stories straight.”
— Hagerstown

“In response to Clear Spring’s inquiry in Wednesday’s paper regarding young people going around selling magazines, saying they’re college students raising money: There were two in the Waynesboro area recently, and no, don’t believe they’re legit. After they left, checked a website they provided and it came up negative. Checked around the neighborhood and compared stories they provided with each neighbor, pointed to ‘con artists’ all the way. Buyers beware.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“I just want to comment on the teachers’ salaries. If you want an education, it’s up to you to pay for it. Taxpayers should not pay for anyone’s education.”
— Hagerstown

“Boonsboro property owner, when limbs from a neighbor’s tree are hanging on your side, you should let that property owner know that you would like those limbs hanging on your side trimmed/cut off. Allow the neighbor 30 days to do so. After the 30 days, if he hasn’t done so, you can then cut or trim what is hanging on your side any time. Just remember that what is cut or trimmed off on your side is your responsibility to dispose of. Don’t throw the debris back on his side, including the falling leaves in autumn. That would be illegal on your part.”
— Downsville

“Hagerstown City Councilwoman Haywood better change her stance on sidewalks, or maybe the next time she won’t be a councilwoman. To tell someone because your neighbor has a sidewalk you have to spend the money to put it in, when people don’t have the money, in this society, with the way the economy is, that’s a terrible thing to say. You will be voted out the next time.”
— Hagerstown

“This is for our illustrious delegation down to Annapolis. Instead of some of the dumb stuff you propose, why don’t you do something with these scooters? Make them licensed, make them have tags, and make them have insurance. Two of them (crashed) in the past week, serious, and it’s been a lot more. Watch them run the red lights and don’t go by, obey the traffic laws. No insurance, no license, no tags. It’s time to enforce a law, propose a new law.”
— Chewsville

“A big thank you to Joe Lane for his informative letter in the Wednesday, May 11 newspaper. Most county taxpayers do not get this information except in bits and pieces. The current commissioners don’t seem to get the message. Pay down the debt and stop aiding developers.”
— Hagerstown

“In Thursday’s paper, they’re advertising for supplies for tornado victims, for Alabama. Well, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, they all need stuff. Why can’t we do it for all of them, not just for one state? And congratulations to the — Larry, in Sunday, May 8, for his letter, and also for Frank True on his letter. Good letters, guys, keep up the good work.”
— Hancock
