14 stores found to be noncompliant in Martinsburg alcohol check

Fourteen stores were listed as non-compliant after the Martinsburg Police Department and the Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducted a compliance operation targeting clerks who were selling alcohol to minors, according to a news release from the police department.

Clerks who sold alcohol to minors were cited for unlawful sale of alcohol by a alcoholic liquor licensee, the release said. The compliance operation was conducted using a minor under the age of 21, the release said.

Individuals found guilty of the violation can be fined up to $500, be jailed up to 30 days, or both.

The compliance operation was conducted May 12 and May 13 and was funded by the United Way through a substance abuse grant, police said.

According to the release, the following businesses who were found to be non-compliant included:


  • Peppers News Stand on North Queen Street.
  • Lupitas on North Queen Street.
  • Berkeley News on North Queen Street.
  • Martins grocery at 900 Foxcroft Ave.
  • ROCS on Winchester Avenue.
  • 7-Eleven at King Street and Winchester Avenue.
  • 7-Eleven on North Queen Street.
  • 7-Eleven on Moler Avenue.
  • Crown Gas on Edwin Miller Boulevard.
  • Rite Aid on Winchester Avenue.
  • Crowell’s on North Queen Street.
  • Bob’s Carry Out on North Raleigh Street.
  • Walgreens Pharmacy on Edwin Miller Boulevard.
  • Food Lion in the Old Courthouse Square.

Men burned in Adams County garage fire

BIGLERVILLE, Pa. — Three men suffered third-degree burns when trapped in a garage during a fire Tuesday evening at 4246 Chambersburg Road in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The men were working on automobiles in the garage when the fire started at about 6:30 p.m., police said in a news release. With the garage door closed, they had trouble escaping the flames until they broke some windows.

William Eugene Rexroth, 45, of Gettysburg, Pa., was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, as was Jerry Edward Shultz, 54, of Biglerville. Randy Lee Beck, 52, of Cashtown, Pa., was taken to Baltimore for treatment, the release said.

A fire marshal is investigating the blaze, but said there does not appear to be suspicious circumstances, according to the release.


Money, other items stolen in Pa. incident


McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. — Money, birth certificates, a gold watch and other personal documents were stolen from a Buchanan Trail home in Ayr Township, Fulton County, on Tuesday, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

Police said a tall, white man with short gray hair and glasses arrived at the home in a minivan around 10 or 11 a.m. He told the victim’s elderly, disabled brother he was there to “take measurements.”

The brother assisted the man in measuring rooms of the home, police said.

After the victim and her husband arrived home, they saw a lock box was stolen, police said.

Incidents reported in Franklin County

The following incidents were reported Wednesday by Franklin County (Pa.) Emergency Services:

  • At 11:04 p.m., wires were on fire in the first block of North Grant Street in Waynesboro.
  • At 11:30 p.m., a residential fire alarm in the 17300 block of Path Valley Road.
  • At 11:39 p.m., a house fire in the 800 block of Pine Stump Road in Greene Township.
