POTOMAC, Md. — St. Maria Goretti lost 9-4 to Avalon in the losers’ bracket final of the Maryland Private Schools ‘B’ Tournament on Tuesday to finish in third place.
The Gaels had 13 hits in the game, including two each by Jake Moats, Kevin Proctor, Vince Turano, Adam Blenckstone, Taylor Litzinger and Ryan Kinter.

Leopards’ Slick to play for Hood
FREDERICK, Md. — Smithsburg senior Luke Slick is set to continue his career at Hood College in Frederick. He was one of 16 recruits announced by Hood coach Jeremy Mattoon on Tuesday that were added to the Blazers’ 2012 roster.
Slick, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound midfielder, will specialize in face-offs and man-up offense, Mattoon said.

Locals at NJCAA nationals
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Smithsburg graduate Chris Bushey shot a 5-over-par 77 for Potomac State College in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II Nationals on Tuesday at Goose Pond Colony Golf Club.
As a team, Potomac State was 14th with a first-round total of 312. The leader is Mesa (Ariz.) College at 2-over 290.
Playing as an individual for Hagerstown Community College, Williamsport graduate Zach Weber had a first-round 8-over 80.
Goose Pond Colony played to a par 72 at 7,100 yards.

Hornbecker scores hole-in-one
CALABASH, N.C. — Curt Hornbecker, 57, of Boonsboro, scored his second career hole-in-one Tuesday at the Brunswick Plantation Dogwood Course.
He used a 6-iron to ace the 167-yard, par-3, fourth hole. His wife, Celeste Hornbecker, witnessed the shot.
