Winners of Congressional art competition announced

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett has announced the winners of the 2011 Congressional Artistic Discovery Competition for the 6th congressional district of Maryland.

The Best in Show winner from the 6th District was Joanna Garcia, a student at HOPE Homeschool in Thurmont, Md. She won for her photograph titled "Screech Owl."

Joanna will have her photograph displayed in the Capitol complex for one year. She also will be invited to attend a national congressional ceremony unveiling the artwork of other Best in Show winners from around the country.

Joanna also is eligible to receive a $1,500-per-year admission scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design, should she be accepted and attend.

Other local winners of the competition include:

  • Computer-generated art — Allison Mackey of Washington County Technical High School
  • Collage — Kat Prataphum of Washington County Technical High School
  • Mixed media — Ciana Ayenu of Middletown (Md.) High School

A reception for the winners will be held Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Bartlett's district office at 1800 Dual Highway in Hagerstown. The reception will feature an exhibition of all of the competition entries.
