BOONSBORO — Elizabeth Hawkins, an eighth-grader at Boonsboro Middle School, has been named a 2011 Carson Scholar.
Six other students from Washington County Public Schools were among those who renewed their Carson Scholar status by maintaining high academic standards and a strong commitment to their communities.
Those students are Kaylee Adelsberger, a sixth-grader at Springfield Middle School; Abigail Jones, a seventh-grader at Boonsboro Middle School; Jordon Edlund, a freshman at North Hagerstown High School; Margaret Manspeaker and Nathaniel Parchment, both sophomores at North Hagerstown High School; and Matthew Koebel, a senior at South Hagerstown High School.
The honor was established by Dr. Benjamin Carson, a professor of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children's Center for more than 25 years.
