HAGERSTOWN — North Hagerstown’s softball team scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a five-inning 10-0 victory over Rockville in a Maryland Class 2A West first-round playoff game.

“We jumped out in the first inning and got a nice comfortable lead,” Hubs coach Amanda Fleming said. “We have been focusing on hitting in practice lately. A few of our girls had been in a slump. But I think today we got a nice offensive effort with hits and good base running.”

North (12-7) will travel to Poolesville on Monday for a quarterfinal game.

The Rams (7-11) committed five of their eight errors in the first inning, and the Hubs took advantage on only three hits — a leadoff infield single by Danielle Wissinger, a two-run triple by Mandy Fiery and an RBI double by Ali Forrest.

“I was really excited, because I had been in a little slump,” Fiery said. “It was an outside pitch and, luckily, I was able to get hold of it. We executed well right from the beginning and that is what we wanted to do. I am hoping that we can keep the momentum going that we have now.”

The Hubs added a run in the second when Allysen Breeden doubled to left, took third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single to left by Rachel Thomas.

North made it 9-0 in the third on an RBI double to left by Shanan Plunkett.

The Hubs scored their final run in the fifth. The speedy Wissinger led off with her second infield single, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error. Plunkett walked and immediately took off for second, drawing a throw that allowed Wissinger to race home, score and end the game.

“We told Shanan (Plunkett) to go ahead in hopes that they would go after that out, so we could score that run from third,” Fleming said.

Freshman Lauren Harbaugh tossed a four-hit shutout and allowed only one walk for the Hubs.

“I was just trying to throw strikes,” Harbaugh said. “My defense helped me out a lot. I was a little nervous out there. But once I got that 7-0 lead, I was able to relax a little bit.”
