PREP SOFTBALL
Smithsburg’s softball team earned the third seed in the Maryland Class 1A West bracket as the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held the playoff draw on Tuesday.
The Leopards (15-3), who won the MVAL Antietam title this season, will host 14th-seed Northern Garrett (4-12) on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. in a first-round game.
Clear Spring (10-8) drew the sixth seed and will host 11th-seed Boonsboro (5-12) on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. The winner will face the Smithsburg/Northern Garrett winner in the quarterfinals next week.
On the other side of the 1A West bracket, Williamsport (10-8) drew the fifth seed and will host 12th-seed Hancock (7-8) on Thursday at 4 p.m. The winner will face the winner between fourth-seed Catoctin (13-3) and 13th-seed Southern Garrett (5-10) in the quarterfinals next week.
In Class 2A West, North Hagerstown (11-7) drew the seventh seed and will host 10th-seed Rockville in the first round Thursday at 4:45. The winner will travel to face second-seed Poolesville in the quarterfinals next week.
In Class 3A West, South Hagerstown (0-17) also drew the seventh seed and will host 10th-seed Kennedy in the first round Thursday at 4. The winner will travel to face second-seed Linganore in the quarterfinals next week.

J.R. Rinehart had a two-run double, while J.R. Crummit, Dylan Eyler and Ryan Bolton had an RBI each for the Leopards.
Logan Appel hit a two-run homer — his eighth of the season — and Nick Hill had two hits for the Blazers.

POTOMAC, Md. — The Heights limited Heritage Academy to three hits to win a first-round game in the Maryland State Private School Class B tournament.
The Heights jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Eagles scored. Nathan Patey drove in a run in the fifth and Hal Smith lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth for Heritage’s offense.
Heritage will play Bishop Walsh in the second round of the double-elimination tournament.

Andrew Ludwick had three goals and three assists, Hal Smith had a goal and two assists, and Kyle Neal and Nick Dawson had a goal and an assist each for the Saints (11-6). Tommy Wagner recorded eight saves.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Maddie Shearer had four goals to lead Mercersburg Academy to a season-ending win over Middleburg.
