HCC falls in region softball final

NORTH EAST, Md. — After edging Chesapeake 3-2 in 10 innings in the losers’ bracket final at the Region XX Division II tournament Sunday, Hagerstown Community College lost 8-0 to Cecil in the championship final.

“We just kind of ran out of gas,” said HCC coach Amy Sterner, whose team finished the season with a 16-15 record.

Against Chesapeake, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run double by Damara McDonough. They broke a 2-2 tie in the 10th on an RBI single by Brittany Larrick.

Amanda Lizama had two of the Hawks’ five hits against Chesapeake and two of their four hits against Cecil in the final.

Shepherd 9-3, Fairmont State 6-5

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Morgan Lautz went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead Shepherd University over Fairmont State in the opener of a West Virginia Conference doubleheader. Fairmont gained the split with a win in the nightcap.

The Falcons (14-30, 11-18) rallied from a 6-2 deficit to get to within 7-6 heading into the seventh inning of the opener. But the Rams (15-22, 10-18) took a three-run edge on a two-run double by Lautz to seal the victory.

Nick Impellizzeri had two hits and scored three runs, while Derek Gunsell added two hits for Shepherd. Val Arduini and Derek Buckley each drove in two runs.

Brandon Coffey (2-0) picked up the win, pitching four innings, striking out four and walking none. Andrew Gallant worked the seventh for the save, striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Falcons broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth.

Lautz smacked a two-run homer to lead Shepherd. Aaron Scoville, Nash Hutter, Impellizzeri and Buckley each added two hits.


Grier heading to nationals

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Coastal Carolina senior Alicia Grier, a Smithsburg graduate, tied for 11th place at the NCAA East Regional with a 2-over-par 218 to help lead the Chanticleers to a fourth-place team finish for the program’s first berth in the NCAA championships.
