Book fair planned at Western Heights

Western Heights Middle School's Parent Teacher Student Association will host its annual buy-one, get-one free book fair today through May 12 during regular school hours in the school's media center at 1300 Marshall St.

The annual event is designed to provide students with the opportunity to stock up on summer reading material.

There will be books for all ages and reading levels.

Parents are urged to visit the book fair with their son or daughter after attending the child's Student-Led Conference on Wednesday, May 11.

Kiwanis Club makes donation

Maj. Robert Lyle of The Salvation Army received a $500 donation from John Roney, president of the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown. The gift will support The Salvation Army's capital campaign to build a multipurpose center.

Barbecue bingo

Western Enterprise Fire Co. will hold a barbecue bingo Sunday, May 22. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and bingo begins at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $20 per ticket. There will be more than 25 cases of meat such as hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, pork chops and  steaks to win. There will also be tip jars and raffles. No one under 16 will be admitted and you must be 18 to play tip jars.

Arc craft bazaar

Arc of Washington County will hold its annual spring craft bazaar Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The bazaar will feature baked good, food items, fresh flowers and crafts.

Arc is at 840 Florida Ave. in Hagerstown.

Relay for Life fundraiser

Relay for Life of Washington County will host its spring fling quarter paddle auction Sunday May 15, at Western Enterprise Fire Hall.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the auction starts at 2 p.m.

A $5 donation includes entrance and first paddle, with additional paddles (up to three) available for an additional donation of $4 each or three for $10.

The minimum bid will be 25 cents, and the maximum bid will be $1.

Food will be available for sale. No outside food will be allowed.

The fire hall is at 526 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown. Proceeds  will benefit the American Cancer Society through its Relay for Life.

The Breakfast for Brains on Friday will feature Heinrich the author of "Jason's Helmet," who will present a slide show about the story of a helmet's journey home from the battlefield. The story begins with her uncle Jason and five of his men near the French village of Louge-sur-Maire in 1944.

After the program, her book will be available to purchase and to be signed.

The center is at 626 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown. It is open to all senior citizens ages 55 and older. For more information, call Kathy Fisher or Linda Rojahn at 301-671-2368.

Yard sale planned

Saint James Brethren Church, at 17718 Lappans Road in Fairplay, will hold a yard sale Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spaces are available to rent for $20 for a space under the pavilion and $15 for a parking lot space. A light breakfast and lunch will be available at the church.
