Ruth Brechbill Zercher, 91, of Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, May 2, 2011, at the home of her daughter.

Born Sunday, July 20, 1919, in Detroit, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Engle Brechbill and the late Abagail Climenhaga Brechbill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Engle Zercher, in 2004.

Following high school, Ruth attended Messiah Bible College for two years, and then went on to Harrisburg School of Nursing for three years. She spent most of her nursing career at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, Pa., retiring in 1995 after 29 years of service. She was very active in her church, Fairview Avenue Brethren in Christ Church, in Waynesboro, Pa. After moving to Hagerstown, she became a member of Paramount Brethren in Christ in Hagerstown. Ruth loved her churches and spent countless hours serving the Lord.

Her family acknowledges with grateful hearts the blessing of her life. She leaves an example of servanthood, serving her family and church through the use of her unique and special gifts.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Z. Stauffer and husband, Jim, of Hagerstown, and Deborah Z. Kingdon and husband, Ed, of Kernersville, N.C.; one son, Fred D. Zercher of Las Vegas, Nev.;  two sisters, Anna Martin of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Lois Musser of Mechanicsburg; nine grandchildren, Janelle Schriver, Yancey Zercher, Jeffrey Stauffer, Joel Kingdon, Julie Cheney, Todd Kingdon, Jenna Hege, Seth Kingdon and Abbie Kingdon; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Stauffer, Emily Stauffer and Hannah Stauffer.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Musser, and brother, Ray Brechbill.

Services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Paramount Brethren in Christ Church, 19106 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, with the Rev. James R. Stauffer officiating.

Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow at the Grantham Memorial Cemetery in Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Child Evangelism Fellowship Inc. of Franklin and Fulton Counties, 45 S. Broad St., P.O. Box 6, Waynesboro PA 17268-0006.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
