HARRISBURG, Pa. — John Wetzel, of Chambersburg, Pa., on Tuesday was confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate as the head of the state Department of Corrections.

Wetzel, who served as warden of the Franklin County Jail since 2002 and as a member of the state Board of Pardons since 2007, will oversee a department with a budget of nearly $2 billion and more than 16,000 employees.

Sen. Richard Alloway II, R-Franklin/Adams/York, applauded the confirmation.

"Secretary Wetzel will bring a great deal of experience to the position, and I am confident he will serve as an effective leader of the Department of Corrections," Alloway said in a news release.
