Local men charged with assault in connection with fight at apartment

May 02, 2011

Two Hagerstown men were arrested after a fight Monday morning at an apartment on East Franklin Street, according to the Hagerstown Police Department.

When police arrived at the apartment, they noticed that William Nelson Giddings, 23, of 815 Armstrong Ave., was suffering from several cuts, according to a news release.

Police said the apartment was occupied by Giddings’ estranged wife and her boyfriend, Ryan Jason Cregger, 22, of 62 E. Franklin St.

Giddings went to the apartment at 62 E. Franklin St. to visit with his estranged wife and their children while Cregger was at work, police said.

After receiving a text message from his girlfriend that Giddings was at the apartment “acting crazy,” Cregger returned home and told Giddings that he needed to leave, the release said.

A fight started and Cregger defended himself with a box cutter tool, which caused injuries to Giddings, police said.

Giddings, who was treated at Meritus Medical Center and released, was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree burglary and malicious destruction of property, police said.

Cregger was charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said.
