The Lord needed a good Marine

To the editor:

This past week, Washington County and the USA lost a tough Marine by the name of Vern Brintzenhofe.

I had trouble pronouncing his last name so I just called him Pappy. He is of the greatest generation I have known in my lifetime. He fought for our country in World War II, and was wounded in Iwo Jima, where he lost three of his buddies. He returned to fight again and was wounded a second time.

He was a member of the Marine Corps League Bulldog Detachment, and president of the 4th Marine Division Association, which he was proud of. He was with the Honor Guard right up to the last.

The last service he was able to be at, he could hardly walk and stand to play the bugle. I helped him to a place where he could sit down, and we told him to just sit and play taps, but when it was time, I looked and there he was standing tall at attention with the bugle. His legs hurt so bad he could hardly walk.

He went through a battle with cancer in his lungs, but it went to his brain and they could not help him there. He did not let that get him down. He told me if the Lord was ready, so was he. Well, the Lord needed a good Marine, so he took him home.

I am going to miss you, Pappy, and so will a lot of others. Farewell, my friend. I salute you and I am proud to have know you and served with you on the Honor Guard and in the Marine Corps League.

Please, just balance the federal budget

To the editor:

Dear President Obama:

Please present a balanced 2012 budget.

The people of America will stand behind you.

P.S: Same for each year after 2012.

Limbaugh column needed different headline

To the editor:

The headline “Ryan 1, Obama 0” on David Limbaugh’s column in the Saturday (April 23) edition of The Herald-Mail more appropriately should have read “Limbaugh 1, Herald-Mail Readers 0.”
