CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — State Sen. Richard Alloway is typically clean shaven while in the capital, but the legislator representing Franklin and Adams counties now sports a beard growing longer by the day.

Alloway, a Republican, is growing the beard in an effort to raise money for Women In Need in Franklin County and PA Tourette Syndrome Alliance Inc. in Adams County. He hands out a flier about the causes when asked about the facial hair.

"It's become a conversation piece," he said.

Alloway said he won't shave as long as the Washington Capitals are in the National Hockey League playoffs. He's a fan of that team as well as the Hershey Bears.

"It's something all hockey fans do. It's called the beard-a-thon," Alloway said.

Potential donors are encouraged to send money to the charity of their choice. For more information, call Alloway's Harrisburg office at 717-787-4651.
