Book fair planned at Hickory Elementary

Hickory Elementary School will hold a book fair May 2 to 6 in the school's media center.

An open house will be held at the school Tuesday, May 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring the children's story character named "Clifford."

Grandparents, please plan to visit on Friday, May 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m for Grandparents Day.

Attention parents of students entering prekindergarten and kindergarten for school year 2011-12: Countywide registration dates are planned Monday, May 17 and Monday, June 14.

Hickory Elementary recognizes students

Students at Hickory Elementary School were honored for displaying outstanding character traits for the month of March. The students were honored at a celebration assembly where parents and teachers attended.

The students honored are Haley Baber, Noah Baker, Kayleigh Bare, Garrett Bloyer, Jaden Brady, Amante Caldwell, Michael Cole, Jamila Cosiem, Kaela Esser, Cortez King, Malachi McNair, Alexis Obitts, Maranda Poffenberger, Zachary Saum, Kensley Shoemaker, Bailee Stevens and Destiny Vinyard.

Valley Mall to host story time May 5

On Thursday, May 5, from 11 to 11:45 a.m., story time with Jeff Ridgeway will be held at Valley Mall. Mr. Jeff of Washington County Free Library, will host the event in the Food Court area. Mr. Jeff, as he is known to local children, has been telling stories at the Central Library, in preschools and daycare settings in and around Hagerstown for many years.

Story time will include reading picture books, flannel-board stories, draw stories, music and other activities that children and their caregivers enjoy.

Community yard sale planned this weekend

A community yard sale is planned Friday and Saturday on Greystone Drive in Halfway, beginning at 7 a.m. each day. Flowers, hanging baskets, antiques and baked goods will be available.

Fundraising yard sale planned for May 13 and 14

A yard sale planned to benefit Relay for Life will be Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Downsville Ruritan Building/Pavilion.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Relay for Life

The Williamsport High School Blue Band has formed a Relay for Life team. The Blue Band has formed the team in memory of Josh Forysthe, a Blue Band trumpet player who died in 2010 from a rare form of cancer. The band's first fundraising event will be a children's games tent at the benefit yard sale for Kristy Danfelt on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Williamsport Community Park. The band plans to give a portion of the money raised to Danfelt and the remaining money raised to the American Cancer Society.
