April 27, 2011

HAGERSTOWN — Four Washington County residents were charged with stealing more than a ton of railroad iron earlier this month in the area of Burhans Boulevard and Business Center Drive near Hagerstown, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Travis Wayne Palmer, 25, Celestine Lee, 43 and Patricia Ann Green, 47, all of Hagerstown, and Lori Lou Palmer, 49, of Smithsburg, were charged with theft of railroad steel, according to a sheriff’s office press release that was issued Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office alleged that the four loaded about 2,460 pounds of railroad steel in the back of Palmer’s Dodge minivan on April 11. The release said they were caught by the Washington Township (Pa.) Police Department during a traffic stop as they were on their way to sell the steel at a scrap yard in Waynesboro, Pa.

Authorities said the steel was worth about $300.
