Western Maryland, W.Va. Eastern Panhandle under tornado watch

April 27, 2011

Nearly the entire state of Maryland, eastern West Virginia and much of northern Virginia is under a tornado watch, the National Weather Service announced Wednesday afternoon.

The tornado watch affecting Washington, Allegany and Frederick counties in Maryland and the Eastern Panhandle counties of Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan will be in effect until 8 p.m., the weather service said at 2:08 p.m.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in and close to the watch area.
