Catherine Jeanetta Preftakes, 85, a resident of Ravenwood Nursing Home, and formerly of 18 Haywood Circle, Hagerstown, Md., died on Monday, April 25, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1925, in Middlepoint, Md., she was the daughter of the late Roy Henry and Nettie May Harshman.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James Ernest Preftakes, on June 6, 1989.

She graduated from Middletown High School in 1942 and Columbia Business College in 1943.

She was employed by Ringer Inc. for 31 years and the Washington County Board of Education, in the South Hagerstown High School cafeteria, for eight years.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown, Md., where she served on the social ministry committee, the kitchen crew and with Lutheran Church Women. She was also a volunteer, through R.S.V.P. at Eastern Elementary School.

She was a member of Funkstown Senior Citizens and served as assistant Girl Scout troop leader and den mother.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen Lighter and husband, Andy, of Hagerstown, and Donna Boschert and husband Mark, of Hagerstown; one son, James R. Preftakes and wife, Nadine, of Lyndeboro, N.H.; one brother, Robert H. Harshman of Middlepoint; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and devoted friend, Della Boschert.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Harshman, and three brothers, Asa Harshman, Paul Harshman and Gordon Harshman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown. The Rev. Michael K. Louia will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Myersville, Md.

Family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Friday from 7 to 9 p. m.
