Reading Day slated for May 7

April 26, 2011

The Washington County Free Library invites the community to celebrate reading at Washington County Reading Day set for Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Valley Mall.

A free book will be given to children who attend while supplies last.

Children are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal to Center Court in front of The Bon-Ton and join in an animal parade at 10:15 a.m. Magician and master of ceremonies Michael T will lead the kickoff parade. The parade will wind through the mall and visit the many authors attending this year's Reading Day celebration before returning to Center Court, where the day's activities will be held.

Children's author Jarrett Krosoczka, special guest and featured speaker, will speak at 11:30 a.m. Krosoczka is the author of "Punk Farm," "Punk Farm on Tour" and the popular "Lunch Ladies" series.

The event also will include magic shows by Michael T at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., a musical performance by the trio Hot Soup at 12:30 p.m., guest author panel discussions and a book/author scavenger hunt. The event concludes with a performance by winners of the Washington County Teen Idol contest.

The event is sponsored by the Washington County Free Library, Washington County Public Schools, Partners in Literacy, the Nora Roberts Foundation, the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Valley Mall.
