Waynesboro police to host prescription drug takeback event

April 24, 2011

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Waynesboro police and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will host a drug takeback event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Waynesboro Mall on East Main Street.

The event is designed to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners, including Waynesboro police.

According to a news release, studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets.

Also, officials say flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash poses potential safety and health hazards.

For more information, call Waynesboro police at 717-762-2132.
