Mail Call - April 21

April 21, 2011

“President Obama campaigned against lobbyists giving money to vote their way and to get out of these wars, and he is doing the opposite. He is doing the same things President Bush did. He should have held out against tax breaks for the rich, because ... John Boehner said if it comes down to not paying unemployment checks, he would not ... he said that the day before in an interview. President Obama gives in. Some said he is a weak president. Tax breaks to the rich and tenure did not produce jobs.”
— Williamsport

“Why do people assume that someone else getting a raise affects your job? This is the same mentality that thinks someone else being gay affects your marriage.”
— Hagerstown

“I agree with the person from Hagers-town that the Barbara Ingram school should be a private school. Also, your paper covers the Barbara Ingram School, but not much is said about the other schools in the county. In short, I’m sure other schools put on plays, but not much is said about them. The same can be said about your coverage of sports games.”
— Sharpsburg

“With gas prices, with high unemployment, rising gas prices, nearly 2 1/2 years later, what do you think of President Obama’s message of change now?”
— Boonsboro

“Some of us people can only go out to eat if we have a discount coupon, so what would be the point of going if what we saved would go to the waitress? We always give at least 15 percent, and with some meals it amounts to 20 percent. I feel at least we do give.”
— Hagerstown

“Hagerstown caller, Sarah Palin’s reasons for leaving her post is none of anyone’s business. People judge before they know the facts. As for the potential candidates being funny farm material, how much of their background do you know? Speaking of funny farms, look at what we have now. President Obama’s done nothing good for us. I’d rather see someone step down from his job than stay in office, use the Americans taxpayer’s money for personal gain, financial ruin. At least Palin is a capitalist.”
— Hagerstown

“Washington County Board of Education needs to give their contractor and board drivers raises. Also the board should take aides off buses who have no child to take care of, especially ones who sleep the whole bus ride. The county should also give their county workers a raise. The reason I’m saying this is the board complains about having no money, but they’re paying aides to sleep on buses.”
— Cearfoss

“To the caller who wants corporations to pay more taxes, three things: One, how do you think corporations pay higher taxes? They raise their prices. Two, the corporate tax rate is 35 percent, the highest in the world. You can’t complain about companies moving out of the country and also want to raise their taxes. Why should they stay here if they can move somewhere with a 20-percent tax rate? Three, GE and other corporations that get out of paying taxes have an army of lobbyists to get them special breaks. The solution is to lower the corporate tax rate and end special tax breaks.”
— Rohrersville

“To comment on the person who said the government is getting raises: Wrong. We haven’t had raises for two years.”
— Hagerstown

“I find it odd that they make note of Buchenwald, the anniversary of when the U.S. troops liberated that concentration camp, but even before Buchenwald, a very famous concentration camp was liberated by the 104th Infantry Division, the Timberwolves. This was concentration camp Dora, but you never hear anything about it. Maybe that is because that’s where Wernher von Braun had all his slave labor for building his rockets and the jet engines. This is a famous area and never gets mentioned in the archives.”
— Hagerstown

“I noticed on my calendar that the second week in April is ‘Be Kind to Animals’ week. I have a much better idea. How about be kind to animals every day of their lives?”
— Clear Spring
