SHA unsure when Md. 550, closed due to mudslide, will reopen

April 21, 2011

THURMONT, Md. — Md. 550 near Thurmont, Md., remained closed Thursday in both directions between U.S. 15 and Eylers Valley Flint Road due to a mudslide that happened last weekend.

Geoff McCammon, a spokesperson for the Maryland State Highway Administration, said  Thursday he was not sure how long the highway will remain closed.

"We want to be cautious with this," he said. "We are trying to make sure everybody will be safe when we reopen it and that it doesn't happen again.

McCammon added it's necessary to take proper care in fixing the road to avoid putting drivers  in danger.

"If we rushed this, people driving on the road could be in danger of additional debris hitting their cars or possibly another mudslide," he said.

More rain could hamper the process, he said.

On Sunday a crew was sent to investigate a report of the mudslide, and while they were out there, the entire bank above the roadway broke loose, causing dirt and trees to slide down onto the road.

The mudslide was among many incidents that happened in Frederick County last weekend. Three tornadoes hit the area, and the Monocacy River overflowed from the heavy rain.
