Abdul Latif of Smithsburg High School won the oratorical competition at Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown.

His sister, Attiya Latif, also of Smithsburg High, took second place.

The other competitors were from Heritage Academy. Troy Cosner took third place, fourth place went to Jared Hamrick, fifth place to Ben Cosner, sixth place to Zachary Muller and seventh place to Tristan Prejean.

Abdul went on to win the county and district competition and finished third at the state level.

Military picnic

Criswell Auto would like to thank all veterans, reservists and active duty soldiers for all they do by having a free Armed Forces Day picnic Saturday, May 21 at noon at the post home in Funkstown. Family members of reservists, veterans and active duty soldiers are invited to attend the event.

Flag retirement

There will be a flag disposal ceremony Saturday, June 11, at 1 p.m. at Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown.

If you have a flag that has proudly been displayed but now needs to be retired, bring it to the flag disposal ceremony.

In honor of all who served, a wreath laying ceremony will be held Sunday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at the post home and immediately following at the Veterans Memorial on Baltimore Street in Funkstown.


Bake sale planned

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Hagerstown Rescue Mission will hold a bake sale Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rescue Mission store on Church Street in Hagerstown.

Easter baskets, baked goods and other food will be for sale.

Discovery Station

Sukey Rankin will present "Origami and Japanese cultural activities" Saturday at 2 p.m. at Discovery Station in downtown Hagerstown.

Holly Place donation

At Christmastime, $1,000 was donated to Holly Place by Bud Kline and family from Engine 3 and Engine 2 and customers at Santa's Shop at Long Meadow Shopping Center.

Christmas dinner was also served at Holly Place by Bud and Doris Kline and his 92-year-old mom, who did all of the cooking.

Legal help for seniors

Members of the Washington County Bar Association will again celebrate Law Day on May 2 by offering free legal advice at the Washington County Courthouse in the Orphans Court, Room 213, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The group will also prepare medical powers of attorney (Advanced Directives), at no charge, from 9 to 1 p.m. at the Senior Center at Girls Inc., 626 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown.

Last year 36 individuals signed up for the legal service.

To inaugurate Law Day, a panel of three volunteer lawyers will respond to questions on the air at station WJEJ, 1240 AM, on Friday, April 29, at approximately 9 a.m.
