A Hagerstown man who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident Thursday night and was apprehended by police a short time later was flown to a Virginia hospital to be treated for his injuries, West Virginia State Police said.

Steve Thompson was listed in fair condition Saturday at Fairfax Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident happened at about 11 p.m. Thursday when Thompson and his passenger, Lorena Roberts of Inwood, W.Va., were traveling south in the 6500 block of Winchester Avenue (U.S. 11) in Berkeley County, according to a state police news release. The motorcycle went off the roadway and struck a utility pole and a parked vehicle.

Police alleged that Thompson fled the scene and was apprehended with the help of a K-9 unit near a residence located off Sir Washington Street.

Roberts was being helped at the scene by a person who lived near the accident, police said. She was pronounced dead shortly after emergency personnel arrived.

Thompson was taken to Martinsburg (W.Va.) Airport to be flown to the hospital, police said.

Further details were unavailable.
