Mail Call - April 15

April 14, 2011

“The question was is there any ‘oversight on car repair places?’: Yes; it’s called the Better Business Bureau in Maryland, or the attorney general’s office in Pennsylvania. Opinion from an ex-automobile mechanic: You were ripped off — unless there was a sign posted in the business that a $300 minimum diagnosis charge applies. First, diagnosing a power window problem is not complicated. The only high cost would be beyond parts if there is no current to the power window switch.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“The more I hear, the more I think the average working person is paying pretty much all the federal income tax being collected. Large companies are leaving money overseas and creating shell companies to avoid tax, everyone and his sister with money is creating tax-exempt charities and churches, Hollywood is cooking the books to show losses on very profitable movies, and the poor are getting more money back than they had deducted for taxes. And so it goes, if you’re earning a decent paycheck, get your wallet out.”

“I saw in the paper last week that Medicare is going up. Can someone please answer this to me. There is a lady in our town who gets all her utilities paid, she goes to the doctor and has no bills to pay and yet no Medicare is taken out of her check. I would like to know how all of us can get Medicare. I don’t think this is fair that she doesn’t have to pay for anything and the rest of us do.”

— Sharpsburg

“This is to the caller from Hagerstown calling in about motorcycle riders not having to wear glasses. Well they do, it’s a Maryland state law that they have to wear eye protective gear while riding. And about motor scooters not having insurance, don’t you think that if they run into someone that they should have to pay for the damages?”

— Hagerstown

“I just have a question. Could someone tell me why we don’t have seatbelts on our school buses? I was just thinking about that, and it doesn’t make any sense to me, how about you?”

— Hagerstown

“I support Independence Day at Sharpsburg. People get together peacefully and enjoy music and fireworks where there was death and hatred so long ago. It’s a nice place to enjoy an evening with family and friends.”

— Hagerstown

“This is the first time I’ve ever agreed with Sen. Shank, but I’m fed up with those mopeds and scooters. Why shouldn’t they have to have tags and insurance, some of them can go up to over 40 mph and I’ve never seen one of them riding on the side of the road anyway. I had a friend get hit by one and the damage was over $700 and of course the guy on the scooter didn’t have any insurance so my friend had to pay for it.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the person who saw the robin with a white head on Georgia Avenue. That robin might be an albino, or it may have another condition, and yes, it is unusual.”

— Hagerstown

“This is the night of April 4/5 around 12:30 a.m. The train going through Halfway sounded its whistle 18 times. This is ridiculous.”

— Halfway

“I see where the doom and gloom Republicans are coming after the working middle class again. Why is it that the working people lose benefits and rights while the CEOs and billionaires get tax breaks?”

— Hagerstown

“In my general observations, I find that there are many people who apparently do not know the meaning of seven words. Those words are yield, moderation, service, compassion, dignity, character and bipartisanship. It would be a better place, a better world, if people would just take time to get to understand the meaning of those seven words.”

— Smithsburg

“In reference to the kids being redistricted down in the West End, is it true or not true that a kid can go to any school, as long as they’re enrolled in that school?”

— Clear Spring

“Thank you, thank you to the individual for having the barrier stakes replaced on Wolfsville Road. Hopefully, the person or persons responsible for removing them will not lose a family member in an accident.”

— Smithsburg area
