Shepherd splits with Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W.Va. — Shepherd plated five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning and held on for a 6-5 victory over Ohio Valley (11-15, 7-10) in the first game of a WVIAC doubleheader split Wednesday.

A three-run double by Brandon Coffey highlighted the inning. Derek Gunsell, Nash Hutter and Morgan Lautz each had an RBI in the victory, Aaron Lee had a double and winning pitcher Paul Hvozdovic had six strikeouts.

Shepherd lost the second game 4-3 to fall to 12-15 (8-12).

Lee had two hits and two RBIs, Gunsell had two hits and Aaron Scoville had an RBI for the Rams.


Schultz moves on in Match Play

LANDSDOWNE, Md. — Beaver Creek professional Dirk Schultz shot a 3-under-par 69 and then swept through two opponents in the Middle Atlantic PGA Match Play.

On Monday, Schultz went bogey-free with a birdie and eagle at Montgomery Country Club to gain medalist honors and a No. 2-seed in the 64-player bracket.

After defeating Geoff Montross, of International Country Club, 4 and 3 and Damon Lucas, of Lake Presidental golf Club, 3 and 2, Schultz is the highest-seeded player remaining.

No. 1-seed Jim Estes was upset by Rick Schuller.

Schultz’ next match play will be against Cary Sciorra at a time to be announced.
