Richard Eugene Bittle, 92, of Hagerstown died Monday, April 11, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center. A kind and gentle man, he captured the hearts of all who knew him.

He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth Bowman Bittle, his wife of 51 years. Born on Sept. 8, 1918, in Myersville, he was the son of the late Emory L. and Bertha Summers Bittle.

He served as a firefighter for Aberdeen Proving Ground before retiring from civil service there, and he was a member of First Hagerstown Hose Co. for many years. As a boy, Richard delivered telegrams by bicycle for Western Union and worked at Emmert's Hardware.

Richard was a lifetime member of the Moose and Elks No. 378 lodges, a past member of the Pangborn Park Turf Bowling League and Washington County Senior Bowling League. He enjoyed travel, playing cards and bingo with his friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann Neiman and her husband, William C., of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Amy L. Brady and her husband, Robert F., of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren, Kate and Matt Neiman and Drew and Michael Brady.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth C. Brandenburg, and his twin brother who died in infancy.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 2 p.m., Friday, April 15, at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville. Pastor David Howell will officiate.

Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Myersville.
