SMITHSBURG — Tires were punctured or cut on 18 vehicles in the Smithsburg, Cavetown and Chewsville areas, according to Lt. Mark Knight of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Knight said he believes the incidents occurred overnight Sunday into Monday.

In some of the cases, all four tires on vehicles were cut or punctured; in other cases, only two tires were damaged, Knight said.

The tires were damaged at 11 addresses, Knight said.

“That’s not to say when people come home from work there might be more,” Knight said Monday afternoon.

Knight said he believes vehicle owners started reporting the damaged tires Monday morning when they were heading to work.

The damaged tires were reported on Pikeside Drive, Wolfsville Road, Greensburg Road, Haven Hill Drive, Rainbow Avenue, Twin Springs Drive and Cavetown Church Road between Md. 67 and Mapleville Road, Knight said.

A malicious destruction of property was reported on MacAfee Hill Road in the Cascade area.

Knight said the crimes appear to be a “kid kind of thing,” but it is difficult to be certain.

No one reported seeing anything suspicious in the areas hit, Knight said.

Knight said anyone with information about the damaged tires may call the sheriff’s office at 240-313-2100.
